The Neverending Story is a fantasy novel by German writer Michael Ende (1929- 1995),first published in 1979.
   The novel,The Neverending Story,is a book about a book.And a movie with the same name was adapted (改編) from the book in 1984.This fairy tale (童話) not only is loved by children but also has a most important message for adults.
   The hero of the story is Bastian Balthazar,a lonely young boy being raised by his widower (鰥夫) dad.Bastian has a sad childhood.His father doesn't look after him very well because he cannot get over his wife's death.Bastian is bullied (欺負(fù)) at school.
   One day,Bastian runs away from the bullies and hides in a bookshop.He steals a book called The Neverending Story.Bastian loses himself in the book.
   The book that Bastian reads is about a land called Fantastica.The Childlike Empress (女王) Fantastica is sick and her land is in trouble.A dark force (力量) called The Nothing is attacking it.She asks a boy,Atreyu,to help her fight against The Nothing before it destroys Fantastica.
   This book is very imaginative (富有想象力的).By reading it,Bastian forgets his trouble and becomes someone with a mission (使命) in Fantastica.He joins forces with Atreyu in the fight against The Nothing.
   In real life,readers are sometimes happy and sometimes unhappy.Some readers have serious problems,others have none.But all of them can relate to (理解) The Neverending Story.As a skillful storyteller,Michael Ende has connected the story to things that might happen in his readers' lives.Of course,it is a wonderful book that tells a meaningful story about the world.
