  • 986.Muzak The next time you go into a bank,a store,or a supermarket,stop and listen.What do you hear?(1)
.It's similar to the music you listen to,but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you,or to give you extra energy.Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (電梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak".About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" every day.The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired.(2)

If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen.Why?(3)

Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do.Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. (4)
.Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
       (5)
.They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another,Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!

E.Muzak tends to help people understand music better.

  • 987.Matthew Youlden speaks nine languages fluently and understands more than a dozen more.(1)
.When I told Matthew how I've been struggling to merely pick up a second language,he had the following advice for me.
       Know why you're doing it
This might sound obvious, but if you don't have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay motivated(有積極性的) over the long-run. (2)
.Wanting to get to know a French person in his or her own language is another matter entirely. No matter what your reason is,once you've decided on learning a language,it's crucial to commit(投入).
       (3)

Matthew learned several languages together with his twin brother Michael. They tackled their first foreign language,Greek, when they were only eight years old!Even if you can't get a sibling to join you on your language adventure, having any kind of partner will push both of you to always try just a little bit harder and stay with it.
       Have fun with it
       (4)
Think of some fun ways to practise your new language:make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, write a poem,or simply talk to whomever you can.
       Act like a child
We learn by making mistakes. (5)
But as adults, mistakes become taboo.Think how an adult is more likely to say,"I can't",rather than,"I haven't learned that yet (I can't swim,I can't drive,I can't speak Spanish)".When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don't know everything is the key to growth and freedom.

    A.Find a partner
    B.Leave your comfort zone
C.We work in the same office in Berlin
D.As kids,we are expected to make mistakes
E.You're learning a language to be able to use it
F.Using your new language in any way is a creative act
G.Wanting to impress English-speakers with your French is not a very good reason

  • 990.Archaeologists (考古學家) may have found the location of an ancient Greek city,Kane. For more than 400 years, what happened to Kane has confused experts. The city, mentioned in many ancient texts, was on one of a group of three islands in the Aegean Sea.These islands were all located off the coast of modern-day Turkey. Two of the islands, now known as the Garip Islands, are still there.
However, the third island,an important stopping point on ancient trade routes,no longer appeared on maps made after the 16th century. No one knew why.
Geo-archaeologists have helped solve the mystery. They said that the island didn't disappear.New evidence suggests that this former island is a mainland peninsula (半島) now. That's almost completely surrounded by water.
How did the island turn into a peninsula? At one time,a channel between two areas of land separated the island and the mainland. "The original channel was blocked out," said Felix Pirson, the leader of the study. That means the space between the island and the mainland was filled with materials carried by running water.
Instead of finding solid ground, the geo-archaeologists discovered loose soil and rock. For scientists, this suggests that the land there was formed recently, perhaps because of the earthquakes.
The scientists are looking forward to doing further testing. They hope to figure out exactly when the land bridge between the mainland and the island formed. They said that this could provide them with more information about the area during ancient times. "The aim is to reconstruct the ancient environment to understand history,"said Felix Pirson.

B.It's important to build a city like Kane.
C.Kane is mainly made up of solid ground.
D.Kane's soil may be formed due to earthquakes.
(4)What is the scientists' aim of doing the research according to Felix Pirson?

    B.To know more about history.
    C.To reconstruct the ancient city.
