  • 2604.Ever since human beings looked out to the sea, they have wondered what was out there. We first began to dive for food. The first sailing vessels(船舶) brought together many cultures that had previously remained isolated. The first diving bells allowed us to work underwater for extended periods of time.As ship construction techniques continued to advance,we were able to go farther out to sea and new lands were discovered. As we began to dive deeper into the sea,we began to understand how deep the oceans really were ...On the website Sea and Sky,you can explore these major milestones and discoveries and learn about the history of ocean exploration.
    5000 BC~1 BC
Ocean exploration began around 5000 BC with the first ocean diving and the first sailing vessels. Many advances were made in the following years including the first diving bells and coastal maps.
    1 AD~1600
As sailing vessels became more advanced, explorers went farther from shore, discovering new lands and travelling around the world.Diving technology also continued to advance during this time.
    1601~1800
During the 1600s and 1700s,deep diving became possible with the development of diving suits and helmets.Expeditions continued to sail the world's oceans and the first submarine was invented.
    1801~1900
Technological advances in the 1800s enabled the development of more advanced diving equipment including the first scuba.Expeditions began to discover the existence of deep sea life.
    1901~1950
The 1900s saw the first maps of the ocean floor and the first deep ocean dives. The aqualung(水中呼吸器) was invented by Jacques Cousteau, and a prehistoric fish long thought to be extinct was found alive on the ocean floor.
    1951~1970
The deepest ocean dive took place in 1960,ocean laboratories evolved, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) was established in 1970 to help with ocean research.
    1971~Present
Since 1970,many exciting new discoveries have been made, including the discovery of deep sea hydrothermal vents(深海熱泉) ,the discovery of the wreck of the Titanic, and the first video of alive giant squid(魷魚) in the ocean.

  • 2609.Australia,the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European nations in the 17th century. These nations were less interested in changing it into a colony(殖民地)than in exploring it.As in the early history of the United States,it was the English who set up the settlements in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common as well.
Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil.It was the eastern coast of Australia and American that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing.Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later.
Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some striking differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution while Australia won its independence without having to go to war.Australia, unlike the United States, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising.By 1922,for example,Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people,or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the United States.Yet,in spite of these and other main differences,Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.

    D.fewer people lived there
    (3)In the early 1920s,
    .
A.Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep
B.there were more sheep in Australia than in the United States
