  • 1.SUNDAY,JULY 12,1942
They've all been so nice to me this last month because of my birthday, and yet every day I feel myself drifting further away from Mother and Margot.I worked hard today and they praised me,only to start picking on me again five minutes later.
You can easily see the difference between the way they deal with Margot and the way they deal with me.For example,Margot broke the cleaner, and because of that we've been without light for the rest of the day.Mother said, "Well,Margot,it's easy to see you're not used to working;otherwise, you'd have known better than to drag the plug(塞子)out." Margot made some reply, and that was the end of the story.
But this afternoon, when I wanted to rewrite something on Mother's shopping list because her handwriting is so hard to read, she wouldn't let me.She shouted at me again, and the whole family wound up getting involved.
I don't fit in with them, and I've felt that clearly in the last few weeks. They're so sentimental(多愁善感)together, but I'd rather be sentimental on my own. They're always saying how nice it is with the four of us,and that we get along so well, without giving a moment's thought to the fact that I don't feel that way.
Daddy's the only one who understands me,now and again, though he usually sides with Mother and Margot.Another thing I can't stand is having them talk about me in front of outsiders, telling them how I cried or how sensibly I'm behaving. It's horrible. And sometimes they talk about Moortje, who is my weak spot.I miss her every minute of the day,and no one knows how often I think of her;whenever I do,my eyes fill with tears.Moortje is so sweet, and I love her so much that I keep dreaming she'll come back to us.
I have plenty of dreams, but the reality is that we'll have to stay here until the war is over.We can't ever go outside, and the only visitors we can have are Miep, her husband Jan,Bep Voskuijl,Mr.Voskuijl,Mr.Kugler,Mr.Kleiman and Mrs.Kleiman, though she hasn't come because she thinks it's too dangerous.
Up to now I've only confided my thoughts to my diary.I still haven't gotten around to writing amusing sketches that I could read aloud at a later date.In the future I'm going to devote less time to sentimentality and more time to reality.

  • 2.A lot of the talk surrounding plastic pollution focuses on its impact on marine(海洋的)ecosystems. But there may actually be more microplastic pollution in the soil than in the ocean, according to UN research.
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO)has released a report warning of the "disastrous" impacts of the use of plastics in agriculture.
"The report serves as a loud call for decisive action tocontainthe disastrous use of plastics across the agricultural sectors," FAO deputy director general Maria Helena Semedo wrote in the report foreword.
Plastics are used in agriculture for a variety of purposes, from mulching films to plastic tree guards. In fact, world agriculture used 12.5 million tonnes (approximately 13.8 million U.S.jye.ai) of plastic for plant and animal production in 2019 and 37.3 million tonnes (approximately 41.1 million tonnes) for food packaging the same year.
While plastic can be beneficial to agriculture, its widespread use also raises concerns about its impact on public health and the environment when it decreases.
This is especially concerning for the world's soils. When microplastics from mulching film build up in surface soils, for example, they reduce agricultural yields(產(chǎn)量).There is also a concern that microplastics in agricultural soils could work their way up the food chain to harm human health. Some plastics contain toxic chemicals themselves, and plastics can also collect and transport diseases and chemicals when they enter the ocean.
The UN agreed that more research is needed to understand how plastic pollution is impacting the world's soils.
"But the trouble is we don't know how much long-term damage the breaking down of these products is doing to agricultural soils," Mahesh Pradhan, coordinator of the UN Environment Programme's(UNEP)Global Partnership for Nutrient Management, said in a recent statement. "We need to develop standardized methods of detecting microplastics in soil to better understand how long they remain there and how they change over time."

    A.lead in topic

B.To appeal to take actions decisively to prevent the disastrous use of plastics.
C.To hold back the heavy use of plastics by the entire agricultural sector.
D.To stress microplastic pollution's influence on agriculture.
(3)According to Mahesh Pradhan, what can we learn?

A.We are facing a trouble that damage done by microplastic to soil is unknown.
B.We have completely understand how microplastics change over time.
C.Our methods of detecting microplastics should be improved to better understand microplastics.
D.The breaking down of microplastics can be harmful for soil.

We probably know that smoking is bad for our health. But what about e-cigarettes?Introduced as a "less-harmful or safer" alternative to smoking,e-cigarettes or "vaping" has gained increasing popularity. However, the Chinese government released a notice to ban the online sales of e-cigarettes from Nov.1st and further reduce the young's access to the products.
This means that e-cigarette makers have to close their online stores and take down online advertisements for e-cigarettes.So far, some e-cigarette firms have closed sales links on their websites, and more than a dozen online stores have removed related products,Xinhua reported. This is not the first government measure to limit the use of e-cigarettes.In August 2018,e-cigarettes were banned from sale to people under the age of 18.
Research has shown that e-cigarette companies tend to target young people with their advertising campaigns, according to the State Tobacco Monopoly Administration. It's found that many firms have been misleading young buyers with messages like, "E-cigarettes could help you quit smoking," and, "E-cigarettes are healthy and harmless." Some even claim that vaping symbolizes "young," "fashionable" and "trendy" to attract the young.Michael Blaha,a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, also mentioned that a lower per-use cost than traditional cigarettes and a wide range of sweet flavors, like apple pie and watermelon, contribute to vaping's popularity among young people.
However,e-cigarettes contain nicotine(though not always),flavorings, and other chemicals, they are harmful to health.Taking in nicotine during youth can lead to addiction and cause long-term harm to brain development.Flavorings added to e-cigarettes can produce more harmful toxins after heating. Thus,it is advisable that the young should limit the exposure to e-cigarettes.
