  • 2.It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a 10.5-mile race over a course through tiring hills.Still I felt rested and springy;despite the hills,it was going to be a fine run.
Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno,a teacher from Mount Kisco,New York. She too was running easily, moving along efficiently at my speed. The pace felt comfortable,so I decided to stay where I was:why bother concentrating on pace when she was such a nice pacesetter for me?I would overtake her later on when she tired.
So I was running closely behind her. Then the race was getting tougher. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.I was breathing hard.
Peggy overtook a young male runner.Apparently she knew him,for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him.Their exchange worried me.You don't chat during a race unless you are feeling good, and Peggy plainly was,but whatever springiness I had once possessed had left me long since.
Still,I was close enough to overtake her if she tired,so I didn't give up hope completely. We were approaching a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test.We were a mile from the finish line,so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, working hard,my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up,Peggy was moving away-first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no hope of catching her.She beat me decisively.
There is an important lesson in that race.Much of what you read about running makes a sharp distinction between the sexes.Women are assumed to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled athletically.Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly demonstrated, the similarities between male and female runners are more important than the differences.

(1)What did the writer think of the conditions of the race?

    A.Long and tough.
    B.Fun and convenient.
    C.Pleasant but challenging.
    D.Comfortable but disappointing.
(2)How did the writer feel about the race when he first saw Peggy?

    A.Humble.
    B.Confident.
    C.Discouraged.
    D.Embarrassed.
(3)What worried the writer according to Paragraph 4?

    A.Peggy came across her friend.
    B.Peggy was extremely tired.
C.Peggy ran past the writer suddenly.
    D.Peggy chatted with another runner.
(4)What can be inferred about the writer before the race?

    A.He had prejudice against women.
    B.He didn't know Peggy Mimno.
C.He didn't dare to face difficulties.
    D.He considered women skilled athletically.

  • 3.While most people don't think much about garbage, trash(垃圾)is beloved by archaeologist(考古學(xué)家).A favorite site for study is a midden(貝丘),an old trash or garbage heap(堆).A midden might contain damaged stone or metal items, which tell us about the weapons and tools people used.Softer materials such as wood, cloth, leather, and baskets are sometimes preserved. They may tell us what people wore, how they carried things,or the kind of toys used by children.Historic household trash heaps often contain broken pottery pieces and even traces of the food they once held.
Most people no longer keep a trash heap by the kitchen door.Instead, garbage is hauled off to landfills(垃圾填埋池).These landfills can still attract archaeologists. The Garbage Project collected information from landfills from 1987 to 1995.Student archaeologists measured tons of garbage from 15 landfills across the United States and Canada. This garbology, the study of garbage, research led to a better understanding of how people have changed what they consume during this period of time. The findings also led to a better awareness of how quickly various items rot. This helped with city planning for garbage disposal and recycling efforts.
Some found objects that may clearly be of archaeological interest, such as arrowheads and spear points. It is typically against the law to collect these on public lands,so they should be left in place. If you take a photo and note the location, you can notify the state archaeologist or the government branch that is in charge of the land, such as the National Park Service or the Bureau of Land Management.
Everyone is responsible for protecting archaeological resources, which is a concept known as "archaeological stewardship." Sometimes this even means protecting old garbage.

(1)Why is old trash important according to archaeologists?

A.It can teach us about the past.
B.It might help us locate metal mines.
C.It can contribute to modern material industry.
D.It might encourage us to protect our environment.
(2)What did the student archaeologists mentioned in Paragraph 2 do?

A.They conducted a study on modern trash.
B.They recycled waste from some landfills.
C.They offered some creative city planning ideas.
D.They compared ancient trash heaps with modern landfills.
(3)What should you do if you find a potential historic item?

    A.Donate it to public collections.
    B.Take it to proper authorities.
C.Leave it in a safe place.
    D.Mark the place of it.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

    A.Past or Future?
    B.Trash or Treasure?
    C.Protection of Damage?
    D.Problem or Resource?

Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky.She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird.
When Jane was in the fourth grade, one day,her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up.She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However,to her surprise, her paper came back with an "F" on it.The teacher told her it was nothing but a "fairy tale",which could never become true.Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad.In her heart, she didn't want to accept that a girl couldn't become a pilot. But as the years went by,Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. "Girls can't become airline pilots;never have, never will. You're crazy." Finally,Jenny gave up her dream.
However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day,Mrs.Marsha asked all the students to think about the question: "What will you do in the future?" At that time,Jenny hesitated for a while. She was worried that she would be laughed at again. But soon she felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream of becoming a pilot right away.
