  • 2.When my grandmother Deed was young she contracted polio (小兒麻痹癥).She was kept in bed for the better part of a year and lost the use of her right leg.She was raising my young father on her own,so it felt like an impossible situation. Her family gave her much support and encouragement.Slowly but surely,Deed learned not only to deal, but to thrive with her disability.People thought she was crazy when she wanted to start her own business, but she was determined. She borrowed money from the bank for her business. She went on to run a successful company and became one of the first women entrepreneurs in the city of Revere,Massachusetts.
I truly believe polio was a gift to my grandmother. It strengthened her beliefs and made her strong and resilient(有適應力的),but it also forced her to slow down and think about everything quietly and seriously. She never complained about her condition, not once.
However,I often got angry and complained when things weren't going my way.Deed would turn to me and gave me advice on my next move.Though far from Hollywood(she lived on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire),Deed seemed to know answers to the problems that seemed to puzzle me.She was my trusted mentor (導師).With each visit, she would help me better myself;expand my mind and go after bigger dreams.
I became confident, more driven and focused on what I wanted to achieve. Each step of the way,Deed was there to cheer me on.The more I leaned back out of fear, the more she challenged me to walk further to the possibilities.
Within a month of selling my first screenplay,Deed passed away. She is on my mind daily. Now,whenever I deal with career issues that scare me,I would remind myself of her greatest piece of advice:Sit down and take a breath. It will all work out.

(1)What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.Introducing Deed to us.
    B.Telling us what Deed suffered.
    C.Showing us the author's family.
    D.Informing us about Deed's disease.
(2)What can we conclude from Deed's disability?

    A.Every dog has its day.
    B.Every coin has two sides.
    C.Hard work pays off.
D.Time and tide wait for no man.
(3)What would Deed do when the author got puzzled in life?

    A.Complain to him.
    B.Give him some advice.
    C.Explain the trouble to him.
D.Move a step forward to him.
(4)Why does the author write this text?

A.To tell us how he got success.
B.To give us some advice on life.
C.To show us his life in the childhood.
    D.To remember his grandmother.

  • 3.Over half of Tokyo's residents don't think the postponed 2020 Olympics should be held in 2021,backing either a further delay or complete cancellation because of fears for the coronavirus, according to a poll(民意調查) published on Monday.
The survey carried out by two Japanese news organizations is only a single data point, but comes after health experts warned that even a year's delay may not be enough to hold the Games safely.
The poll found 51.7 percent of respondents hope the Games in 2021 are postponed again or canceled, while 46.3 percent want to see the rescheduled Olympics go ahead.Among those opposed to the 2021 Games,27.7 percent said they want them canceled altogether, while 24 percent would prefer a second postponement.
The telephone poll, conducted by Kyodo News and Tokyo MX television between Friday and Sunday, received 1,030 replies.Of those who said they want to see the Games held in 2021,31.1 percent said the event should be on a smaller scale, while 15.2 percent said they want to see fully developed Olympics.
Tokyo 2020 was postponed in March as the coronavirus spread across the globe, causing the worst disruption(中斷) to the Olympics since two editions were canceled during World War Ⅱ.The Games are now scheduled to begin on July 23,2021,although they will still be known as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Officials from Japan and the International Olympic Committee(IOC) have warned that it will not be possible to postpone them again, and even the year-long delay has created significant financial and logistical(后勤的) headaches.
Earlier in June, the mayor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike told AFP that the rescheduled Olympics will be safe despite the coronavirus pandemic, promising to make a "120-percent effort" to ensure the first-ever postponed Games can go ahead.Koike has been heavily involved in preparations for the Games, traveling to Rio for the handover ceremony after the last Summer Olympics.

It was deep into the night many years ago.The rain just came pouring down outside. An elderly man and his wife entered the lobby (大廳)of a small hotel in Philadelphia,USA.
Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get a room to stay in for the night.
"Could you possibly give us a room here?" the husband asked.
The clerk,a friendly young man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conferences in the town. "All of our rooms are taken," the clerk said. "But I can't send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o'clock at night.Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It's not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night."
When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. "Don't worry about me.I'll make out just fine," the clerk told them.So the couple agreed.
As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, "You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel.Maybe someday I'll build one for you."
The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional,as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn't easy.
Three years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the thing when he received a letter from the elderly man.It recalled that stormy night, when he offered his kind help to the elderly couple. In the envelope, there was a round-trip ticket to New York, and a letter asking the young man to pay them a visit. The young man decided to set out immediately.
