  • 2.The most important life lesson I've learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways.In particular,it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隱喻) for life.I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice:run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right.Over time I ran more easily and faster.I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life.Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day.It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life.Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing.Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I'm not suggesting we postpone dreams.Of course,we should do what matters to us,but it's easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基準(zhǔn)) to be met. It's a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing.Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at.Run at your own way.Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need.In living life on our own terms,we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.

(1)What motivated the author to participate in marathon?

    A.Her eager interest in running.
    B.Her strong curiosity for marathon.
C.Her keen wish to celebrate her birthday.
D.Her urgent need to enhance her strength.

    A.Setting a target time.
    B.Finding your limitation.
    C.Challenging fixed ideas.
    D.Running at your own pace.
(3)How does the author feel about being retired?

    A.Nervous.
    B.Confused.
    C.Optimistic.
    D.Grateful.
(4)What can we know about the author?

A.She benefits from the coach's words.
B.She used to be a professional runner.
C.She sees the value of a reference point.
D.She's suffering a lot from peer pressure.

  • 3.Dogs see the world through their noses.Their special ability to recognize specific scents helps them find bombs, guns, drugs and human remains.Man's best friend may also be his best health ally. There are reports about dogs trained to sniff (聞) out cancer, diabetic conditions and other health problems.According to a new study, dogs can do something just as remarkable:sniff out stress in people.
While previous studies have suggested dogs might pick up on human emotions.possibly through smell, questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through smell. "This study has definitely proven that when people have a stress response, their odor (氣味) profile changes." said Clara Wilson.a PhD student and first author of the research.Wilson added the findings could prove useful when training service dogs that support people with emotional damage.
Wilson and her colleagues were able to train four dogs to indicate the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the line-up included unused gauze (紗布),samples from another person,or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day.
Then the team turned to samples collected from 36 people, who were asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17.The participants reported feeling stressed by the task and,for the 27 who carried it out in the laboratory, their blood pressure and heart rate rose. The dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task from two containers holding unused gauze.
The researchers then included not only unused gauze but samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials. The results reveal that the dogs chose the "stressed" sample in 675 out of the 720 trials.
The team say while it was unclear what chemicals the dogs were picking up on,the study shows humans produce a different odor when stressed.

(1)What has the new study found about dogs?

A.They can detect stress in people.
    B.They can influence our emotions.
    C.They can discover potential dangers.
D.They can sniff out diseases like cancer.
(2)Why were the participants asked to count down numbers?

    A.To help them better focus.
    B.To create a tense situation.
C.To test their ability to count.
    D.To monitor their blood pressure.
(3)Which of the following can be inferred from the text?

A.Stressed samples are more difficult to identify.
B.Dogs can easily recognize their owners' smells.
C.Human breath and sweat change under pressure.
D.The team will reveal the chemicals dogs nose out.
(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Dogs Might Also Suffer from Stress.
    B.Dogs Contribute to Relieving Pressure.
C.Dogs Aid People with Mental Disorder.
D.Dogs Know When You're Stressed Out.

  • 9.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
I remember the first time I got on a horse.I was two years old and we were watching a friend of the family ride.My mom agreed to let me take a short ride with the friend and that was it!I was horse crazy. From then on,I drove my parents insane begging for a horse.
When I was four years old,I had Selective Mutism (緘默癥).This is a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations.I spoke normally to my parents,my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations.I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school.
I suffered silently through school until I was ten years old when one in a long string of psychologists had an idea. One day I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given an opportunity to work for it.I couldn't believe my good luck, but I could not answer.Finally.I was permitted to whisper the answer in my mother's ear. "A horse." was all I could say.
I was to get a little horse, but I had to live up to my end of the bargain.I had a chart of weekly tasks I had to accomplish.I had to answer the phone five times per week, make five phone calls to my friends, say one word to my teacher at school. .and the list went on.For a child with Selective Mutism, saying one word to someone can be like climbing Mount Everest.
I did everything that was asked of me and the day came when my parents found a local riding stable that had the perfect pony. His name was Sequoia,so perfect that I fell in love with him immediately. We boarded him and I began taking lessons. It truly was a dream come true.
