  • 2.Every year,my neighborhood has a big fall party in our local park. But this year, our gathering has been canceled because of the serious pandemic(流行病).All is not lost, though,as we've come up with a fun activity that is been introduced to neighbors of all ages and it is able to safely take place in a different way. We're calling it a "Book Swap n' Stroll",and it's an idea worth sharing.
Everyone who wants to participate in the activity adds their address to a list that we'll use to create a simple map of the neighborhood with marks indicating participating homes. Then we all head to our bookshelves, sorting out books that our families are no longer using or enjoying. On the appointed day, each neighbor will bring their books outside and lay them out on folding tables set in the grass.
Next step, walk!Wearing masks and equipping with a bag,we'll walk around the neighborhood, using the map as a reference to hunt for books to stuff into our bags and bring home for cosy(舒適的)winter reading. You don't have to give in order to take, and you don't have to take if you've given. It's open for everyone to use the occasion to exchange books.
At the end of the day,we have volunteers who line up to collect the books, pack them into boxes and drive them to a book donation site.We are lucky to have a used bookstore nearby that also is a training center for underserved young people who want to learn business and management skills.
Here's the best part-this book exchange getting a glimpse(一瞥)of someone's book collection gives you a glimpse into their lives and hearts. They say good fences make good neighbors. It turns out the same is true of good books.

(1)Why has the annual big fall party been abandoned this year?

    A.It is out of date.
    B.A terrible disease is spreading.
    C.There are no elderly neighbors.
    D.There is another interesting activity.

B.They should draw a map of their neighborhood.
C.They should select their favorite books to share.
D.They can display their books on tables any day.
(3)What can we infer about the books that no one picks?

A.They are collected together for sale.
B.Volunteers sort and take them home.
    C.A book organization purchases them.
D.They're donated to a used bookstore.

  • 3.Smartphones may soon be able to tell whether someone is drunk based on the way they are walking, even if the phone user is unaware of the fact.
Brian Suffoletto, now at Stanford University in California, and his colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, wanted to see if they could take advantage of the sensors(感應(yīng)器)placed inside most smartphones to discover changes in walking patterns that occur when people are drunk.
Suffoletto and his team recruited(招募)22 volunteers and gave each an hour to consume a mixed drink with enough strong drink to produce a breath alcohol concentration of 0.2 per cent, well above the legal limit for driving in the US of 0.08.They then tied a smartphone to each participant's lower back.Every hour for the next 7 hours, the volunteers were breathalyzed and then asked to walk in a straight line for 10 steps, turn around, and then walk back 10 steps.
More than 90 per cent of the time, the researchers could use changes in a person's walking gait measured by the sensor in the smartphone to correctly predict when breath alcohol concentration were higher 0.08 per cent.
Suffoletto says the next step will be to determine whether it is possible to tell a walking pattern correctly when the phone is placed in different positions, such as when it is held in a person's hand or is in their pocket.
"It could be used by individuals who want a warning when they are showing signs of impairment(障礙)," says Suffoletto.Previous research by his team found that people don't realize they are impaired up to 50 per cent of the time when they are drunk. "It could warn someone who may not recognize the impairment and prevent them from driving their car when they are drunk," he says.

(1)What is the purpose of the research by Suffoletto and his colleagues?

    A.To check people's health.
B.To improve the quality of smartphones.
C.To make use of the sensors in smartphones.
D.To introduce a new smartphone to people.
(2)What does the underlined word "gait" probably mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Memory.
    B.Step.
    C.Basis.
    D.View.
(3)What may Suffoletto's next research focus on?

A.Setting a warning to drunk people.
B.Testing the correctness of a new sensor.
C.Applying smartphones to breathing test on the road.
D.Testing the correctness of measuring in different positions.
(4)How can smartphones help people according to Suffoletto?

A.By warning them not to drive after drinking.
    B.By keeping them from driving.
    C.By avoiding them over drinking.
    D.By preventing them from walking.
