  • 2.When Wendy McDowell was eight years old,she found herself all alone in one of the busiest international airports in the country. "Do you know what feeling I had then?" she recalled. "When I looked around, every single face was a stranger's face. How terrifying it was!"
It was two decades ago and McDowell needed to fly from Bismarck to Burlington. No one in her family could go with her,so her parents let a 19-year-old relative accompany her.
However, when they arrived at their layover(中轉(zhuǎn)站),their flight was canceled. What the relative did next still shocked McDowell. "She just bought herself a ticket back home and left me alone. With no flight,no plan, and no adult in charge of me," she said. "I felt so hopeless until a woman walked to me."

  • 3.3,900 feet below the surface, scientists in New Zealand found a "mysterious creature".They discovered the newly-hatched ghost shark(魔鬼鯊)on the Chatham Rise,a part of the ocean floor located off the eastern coast of the South Island.
Ghost sharks are deep-water animals closely related to sharks and rays. These fish are also some-times called ratfish or rabbitfish.
They lay eggs on the seafloor where the embryos(胚胎)feed off the egg yolk(蛋黃)until they hatch.A scientist on the team who discovered the baby ghost shark said they were able to identify the shark as a baby because its stomach was still full of egg yolk.
"We don't actually know much about ghost sharks," said Brit Finucci,a fisheries scientist on the study. "What we do know mostly comes from adults of their species. So it's very rare and very uncommon to find juveniles of a lot of these species,so that's why I got quite excited."
Because ghost sharks make their home in very deep water, they are difficult to study. While the exact species of ghost shark isn't known yet, scientists hope this discovery will help inform them of the knowledge of this mysterious creature.
Scientists hope the "very rare" finding will fill in research gaps about the species. "We're hoping this will give us some more indication about the biology and ecology," said Finucci.Researchers are using this shark to account for biological differences between juvenile and adult members of the subclass.Finucci added, "We're not sure what we're going to find, which is also quite exciting."

(1)How did the scientists identify the shark as a baby?

    A.By its habitat.
    B.By its appearance.
    C.By the food it consumed.
    D.By the eggs it laid.
(2)What does the underlined word "juveniles" in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Grown-up fish.
    B.Young sharks.
    C.Strange eggs.
    D.Uncommon creatures.
    (3)Why is the discovery significant?

A.It will lead to research work into deep water.
B.It warns people to protect uncommon sea lives.
C.It may reveal unknown facts about ghost sharks.
D.It excites scientists' curiosity about ghost sharks.
(4)Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Mysterious Creature Found to Lay Eggs in Deep Water.
B.Newly-hatched Baby Shark Excites Scientific Imagination.
C.Scientists Announce New Findings on Rare Shark Species.
D.Rare Baby Ghost Shark Discovered off New Zealand Coast.

  • 9.I was twenty when living away from home alone.I kept a gentle dog named Beaufort who weighed more than me and had a mouthful of sharp teeth.I felt safe going anywhere with Beaufort. In order to be free to walk Beaufort in the park during daytime,I worked the four-to-midnight shift in downtown. The only disadvantage was that I had to ride the last subway home late at night. As time passed,I developed a way to keep to myself like other passengers—avoiding eye contact and keeping reading while I rode.
One night, the station was quiet as usual.I walked over to the collector's booth(售票亭)and pulled out a dollar. "One token(乘車(chē)幣),please." As the collector slid the token and my change under the window,he spoke, "Would you like a dog?" I looked at him in surprise, not sure whether I had heard him correctly. "Would you like a dog?" he repeated.
He picked up a little dog and set it on the counter.I bent over and it was only then that I saw the subject of his inquiry. The dog appeared to be trembling(顫抖).I was surprised. "Where'd it come from?" I asked. "She showed up this morning and has been here ever since. No one has come for her.I've asked everyone coming here if he wanted her.Nobody would take her." "What about you?" He smiled, "Me?No.My wife would be angry." I couldn't take my eyes off the dog.The collector continued: "If you don't take her,I'll have to let her go when I leave." I couldn't believe it!He explained that it was almost closing time,he couldn't leave her in the booth, neither could he bring her home.I,in other words, was the dog's last hope.
"Okay,I will take her.I'd name her Phyllis".With excitement, the collector walked out of the booth and handed me my new pet. "Thank you so much."
