  • 2.Mario's tired feet carried him up the narrow metal staircase to the upper deck. With his lantern in hand,he checked the living-room and the dining hall, but his father was nowhere to be seen. Most of the men had retired to their bedrooms for the night. The surest place to find him was the captain's library. His father kept scores of books at home, but had packed only a few favorite ones in his luggage. Some evenings he liked to sit in the ship's library, buried in heavy,salt-stained books about the places they would soon visit.
Mario walked his way through the dark corridor(走道),guided only by the light from his lantern.Suddenly,he heard a funny sound like a held-back sneeze,he thought. He turned around, looking for the source, but he couldn't see anyone else.Shrugging,he continued down the hall until - "Achoo!" A real sneeze erupted in the narrow hall.
"Who's there?" Mario called. There was no answer.Maybe those girls were playing a trick on him, trying to scare him.Holding his light high,he began to search the walls, looking for a door or window where someone might be hiding. There was only a narrow fireplace. He lifted his lantern and looked into the darkness beyond. When his light reflected in two dark eyes,he sprang back with a scream.
"Who are you? What are you doing in there?" he cried.
After a long silence,a whisper came through the fireplace. "Don't tell anyone, please, sir.I boarded the ship to escape my cruel step-father,but if they find me,they will send me back to him,or make a slave of me,or worse!"
Mario's fear disappeared as the boy spoke. "I'm Mario," he offered. "What's your name?"
       "Benito," the boy replied.
"Come out,Benito." Mario insisted. "My father would never let anyone harm jye.ai.You must be starving.Come out,and we'll have apples and bread, and you can sleep in our bedroom." More long moments followed as the boy considered his situation. Finally he climbed out of the fireplace and stood on his unsteady legs.
"Let's go find my father," Mario said. "This voyage is turning out to be a good adventure, after all!"

  • 3.The summer of 1988 was the driest in Yellowstone National Park's recorded history. The dried grasses and leaves in the forest of western Wyoming had set the stage of a fierce fire. All that was needed was a trigger.
A few small fires started in June.By August and September, lightning set some fires, and careless people set others.Soon fires swept across the park. The heat of the fire made winds stronger.Fierce winds blew flames from place to place.Animals raced for their lives.
More than 25,000 people worked to fight the fire, but they made little impact.Rain and snow finally began to fall, and weeks later, the fire was over.Vast areas of the park were burned. Many people thought the forest had been lost Most did not expect it to regrow, soon.
Fire plays a key role in the park's ecosystem.According to a forest manager, when a fire approached, the animals ran away to an open area. Then many of them headed right back into the burned areas.
It turns out that fire is not all bad in the park.In fact, many living things have adaptations that allow them to survive and even grow stronger after a fire! For example, lodgepole pines make up nearly 80% of the park's forest. They are adapted to reproduce after a fire. The mineral soil left from the fire improved conditions for them to grow stronger.
Park scientists learned from past fires. For years, most park managers believed they had to put out all fires to save park resources. But scientists learned that stopping all fires reduces the number of plant and animal species. In 1972,Yellowstone managers began allowing most fires to burn if they were started naturally. They still fought human-caused fires and protected homes and towns from fires. The 1988 fires helped scientists learn more ways to manage fires.

  • 4.England and Wales launched a COVID-19 smartphone app in October, allowing users to track contacts, check the local level of risk and record visits to high-risk places, four months after the technology was promised to the public.
The government had said a COVID-19 app would arrive in May,but early testing was dogged by problems, and developers gave up home-grown technology, preferring models in other countries in June.As the delay lengthened, the government played down the importance of smartphones in fighting COVID-19,saying that rather than an app being central to the test and tracking system,it was "the cherry on the cake".
According to NHS report, however, with infection rates rising, every tool available must be used to prevent transmission, including the latest technology. "We have worked with tech companies, international partners, and privacy and medical experts to develop an app that is secure, simple to use and will help keep our country safe."
The app uses Bluetooth signals to log when a user is in close contact with another user, within two meters for 15 minutes or more.If someone then tests positive for COVID-19,they can choose to share the result anonymously(匿名的)with their close contacts, who will each receive a warning and will have to isolate for 14 days. The app will enable users to book a COVID-19 test if it is available, check symptoms, and register using a QR code.
People aged over 16 will be encouraged to download the app by advertisements with the line:"Protect your loved ones.Get the app." Britain has recorded 6,178 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, which is close to the highest ever daily total, recorded in early May.

(1)Why was the launch of the NHS COVID-19 app delayed?

A.The British government gave up the system.
B.People didn't want their cell phone tracked.
C.The early experiments didn't go on smoothly.
D.The app faced competition from foreign countries.
(2)What does the underlined phrase "the cherry on the cake" suggest?

A.The app is getting more popular.
B.The app is not the most essential.
    C.The app still needs improvements.
D.The app should be thought highly of.
(3)What is the function of the NHS COVID-19 app?

A.It helps users to book a test by using Bluetooth.
B.It uploads information of patients to a central server.
C.It informs people when their close contacts test positive.
D.It enables people to register to hospitals using QR codes.
(4)Why is the number of coronavirus cases mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To prove the necessity to use the app.
B.To describe the serious situation there.
C.To show the number of patients cured.
D.To build up people's trust in their government.

    Dear Li Hua,
How's everything?Do you remember last time you asked me to visit your hometown in the future?I was so thrilled at the idea that I signed up for a Chinese course at school.
However,it is not as easy as I thought.Chinese uses a writing system that is unfamiliar to English speakers.Chinese doesn't have an alphabet(字母)like we do.There are thousands of characters. That means have a lot of memorizing to do.And characters are just part of the learning.I suddenly feel at a loss.I was wondering if you could offer me some practical advice about this.
        Looking forward to your reply.
    Yours,
    Tom
