2.I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn't like attention drawn to myself. And unless assigned (指定) a seat by the teacher,I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this changed after I joined a sports team.It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team.At first I thought it was a crazy idea because I didn't have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the ability to keep pace with the others on the team and they would laugh at me.But for the teacher who kept insisting on my "going for it",I wouldn't have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts (選拔賽) was only the half of it!Luckily,I passed them. When I first started attending the practice sessions,I didn't even know the rules of the game, much less what I was doing.Sometimes I'd get confused and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really stupid.Thank God,I wasn't the only one "new" at the game,so I decided to focus on learning the game,do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn't know "just yet".
I practiced and practiced.Soon I knew the rules and the "moves".Being part of a team was fun and encouraging.Very soon the competitive part in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time,I learned how to play and made friends in the progress—friends who respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player.I never had so much fun!
With my improved self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates.I have gone from "hiding" in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself,to raising my hand—even when I sometimes wasn't and not 100 percent sure I had the right answer. Now,I have more self-confidence in myself.Every time I come across a challenge,my teacher's "going for it" rings in my ears.

A.pass the tryouts
B.know what they will do

A.He has got more praise and become overconfident.
B.He has continued to sit in the back of the classroom.
C.He is willing to answer questions in class now.
D.He focuses more on study rather than basketball.
(4)What does the author want to tell us in the passage?
A.Team spirit can teach us a lot.
B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Go for it,and we will make it.
D.Desire to compete does matter.組卷:2引用:3難度:0.3 -
3.Navigating (導(dǎo)航) in China is easy and convenient — if you can read Chinese.Baidu and Alibaba offer fully featured map apps with detailed information, but foreigners have little access (通道;機(jī)會(huì)) to it.
"As a foreigner who can't read Chinese characters,I noticed there was this hole," said Jason Stine,a software engineer from the US,in an interview with the Charming China podcast. To fill that hole,he created his own app, called Lost Laowai.
Stine,31,has lived in cities around China for seven years. He says people who can't read Chinese are "a drop in the bucket (滄海一粟)" for companies like Tencent and Alibaba. There aren't enough of these people for English versions of their apps to make economic sense. So Stine made one himself. "It's essentially a translation of Alibaba Maps," he said.
"The idea was to put everything into three forms.Chinese characters,pinyin...and then the English translation." Also useful,it gives directions for city buses, one of the most difficult things for foreigners in China.
Although the app is useful,Stine says that it looks a bit "amateur (業(yè)余的)". "I don't have an app development background," he adds, "I am self-taught."
Stine has a full-time job with a Hong Kong company,so Lost Laowai is a weekend project. He depends on his user community,a WeChat group where users can report bugs and request features.
These lost laowais may be there to report bugs, but they are enthusiastic users of the app. "As someone actively trying to learn Mandarin,I...like the way the address is showed:Chinese characters,Pinyin, and English," said Kevin Mulligan,a South African living in Shenzhen.
Lisa Schooling, from the US,has used the app in Suzhou and says it gives her a sense of safety. "I just like the feel that no matter where I am,I can check the app and gain a sense of direction," said Schooling.

4.You are sitting in a restaurant and a server brings over a glass of water and drops a plastic straw (吸管) next to the glass.Any idea how many plastic straws are thrown away in the US everyday?Around 500 million!Plastic straws were the seventh most common type of litter found during beach cleanups this year!Last year,a diver diving in Australia collected 319 plastic straws in just 20 minutes. The next day,she returned to the same location and found another 294 straws.
Very few single-use plastic straws are recycled. They break down into tiny bits of plastic, and are eaten by sea life.Luckily, thousands of people have gotten involved (參與) with the cause, including kids!
In 2011,9-year-old Milo Cress made an interesting observation after ordering a drink of juice in a restaurant, "I noticed the servers automatically placed a plastic straw by my drink." Milo thought this was a real waste and thought there had to be something he could do about it.Milo talked with plastic producers to get an estimate of just how many straws we use.He learned that 500 million plastic straws are used every day! This inspired him to start a project called Be Straw Free.Milo encouraged restaurants not to hand straws out so freely. "Actually," remembers Milo, "businesses liked the idea as it would save them money."
Milo was one of many kids to become involved with the cause.Earlier this year,a group of third-and-fourth-graders from Seattle,Washington, spoke with local lawmakers about the harm plastic straws have on sea life and our environment. The group, calling themselves the Straw Kids, would like cities to ban their use,and would like other kids to rethink the use of single-use plastic straws.Megan O'Reilly,9,says, "We are making a website,strawkids.jye.ai,which will help us get the word out that plastic straws are bad,and help us get more supporters."
