  • 43.Getting along with parents
Can you get along well with your parents? Is it possible to be friends with your mom and dad?
Nowadays Chinese kids have difficult relationships with their parents. Parents with high expectations (期望) for their kids are nothing new to Chinese kids. However, people often don't know that kids also have expectations for their parents. What expectations do Chinese kids have for parent-kid relationships?
China Youth & Children Research Center did a survey on this topic in the USA, Japan, South
Korea and China. Let's see the result.
    China US Japan South Korea
Kids want to be friends with parents 83.3% 80.5% 78.2% 76%
    Kids think parents understand them 80.6% 86.6% 89% 93.3%
Tina Ren, 13, is an ABC, or American-born Chinese. Although her family lives in California, they can't keep themselves away from the influence of their Chinese background."I feel like my American friends are closer to their parents. Girls tell their moms secrets, go shopping with them for clothes and they do each other's makeup and everything. But in Chinese families, kids usually don't do things like that."
Many experts say that traditional Chinese values (價(jià)值) such as respecting the old and the concept of hierarch (等級(jí)觀念)are stopping parents from being friends with their kids. And many Chinese parents push their kids, because there is lots of competition in school. Not only parents but also kids have to try their best to create a friendship in family.
As kids, what can you do to improve the relationship? Read on to find out!
           ? Open your heart
Sharing your feelings with your parents can lead to positive changes, while not sharing them
may make them misunderstand you sometimes.

Do some housework for them, make them gifts or teach them some computer skills. Their trust in you will grow.
