  • 2.Though thousands of adventurers have climbed up Mount Everest, the highest and most famous of the world's 14 tallest mountains, only 40 climbers have conquered them all.Nepalese mountaineer Purja became one of them after he reached the 8028-meter peak of China's Mt.Shishapangma on October 29,2019.Purja made the extraordinary achievement in just six months and six days.
"I am very excited and proud to have reached this final peak and achieved my goal of climbing the word's 14 tallest mountains in record time," Purja said. "It was extremely hard during the six months, and I hope to have proven that anything is possible with some determination self-belief and positivity."
Purja's "Project Possible" started becoming a reality on April 23,2019,when he successfully peaked Nepal's 8091 meters tall Mt.Annapurna.The climber then rapidly completed the next five mountains, including Mt.Everest, within only four weeks!Five more peak were conquered in July and the last three during September and October.

  • 3.If you want to disturb the car industry you'd better have a few billion dollars. But in agriculture, small farmers can get the best of the major players.By connecting directly with customers, and by responding quickly to changes in the markets as well as in the ecosystems(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)),small farmers can keep one step ahead of the big guys.As the co-founder of the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC,美國青年農(nóng)會(huì))and a family farmer myself,I have a clear vision of the innovations among small farmers that are transforming the industry.
For example, take the Quick Cut Greens Harvester,a tool developed just a couple of years ago by a young farmer,Jonathan Dysinger,in Tennessee, with a small loan from a local Slow Money group. It enables small-scale farmers to harvest 175 pounds of green vegetables per hour-a huge improvement in contrast to harvesting just a few dozen pounds by hand-suddenly making it possible for the little guys to compete with large farms of California. Before the tool came out, small farmers couldn't touch the price per pound offered by California farms. But now, with the combination of a better price point and a generally fresher product, they can stay in business.
The sustainable success of small farmers, though, won't happen without fundamental changes to the industry One crucial factor is secure access to land.Competition from Investors, developers, and large farmers makes owning one's own land impossible for many new farmers. From 2004 to 2013,agricultural land values doubled, and they continue to rise in many regions.
There are solutions to a more sustainable and fair farm economy, but they cannot be realized merely by farmers alone. We at the NYFC need broad support as we urge the government to increase farmland conservation,as we push for immigration-reform,and as we seek policies that will ensure the success of a diverse and next generation of farms from all backgrounds.

(1)The author mentions car industry at the beginning of the passage to introduce
    .
    A.the progress in car industry
    B.a(chǎn) special feature of agriculture
C.a(chǎn) trend of development in agriculture
D.the importance of investing in car industry
(2)What does the author want to illustrate with the example in paragraph 2?

A.Loans to small local farmers are necessary.
B.Technology is vital for agricultural development.
C.Competition between small and big farms is fierce.
D.Small farmers may gain some advantages over big ones.
(3)What is the difficulty for those new farmers?

    A.To gain more financial aid.
    B.To hire good farm managers.
C.To have farms of their own.
    D.To win old farmers' support.
(4)What should farmers do for a more sustainable and fair farm economy?

    A.Seek support beyond NYFC.
    B.Become members of NYFC.
    C.Expand farmland conservation.
    D.Invest more to improve technology.

  • 4.Video calls are a common occurrence, but have you imagined being able to touch the person on the other end of the line?Scientists are making this a reality.
Researchers at the University of New South Wales,Australia, have invented a soft skin stretch device(SSD),a haptic (觸覺的) device that can recreate the sense of touch.Haptic technology mimics (模仿) the experience of touch by stimulating small areas of the skin in ways that are similar to what is felt in the real world, through force, vibration (震動(dòng)) or motion.
Vibration is the most common haptic technology today and has been built into many electronic devices, such as one attached to the back of a trackpad(觸控板) in laptops, which mimics a button clicking. However, haptic feedback with vibration becomes less sensitive when used continuously. The existing technology also has great difficulty recreating the sense of touch with objects in virtual environments or located remotely, according to Mai Thanh Thai, lead author of the study.
The new technology overcomes issues with existing haptic devices. The research team introduced a novel method to recreate the sense of touch through soft, artificial "muscles".
"Our three-way directional skin stretch device, built into the fingertips of the wearable haptic glove we also created,is like wearing a second skin - it's soft, stretchable and mimics the sense of touch - and will enable new forms of haptic communication to enhance everyday activities," said Thanh Nho Do,senior author of the study.
It works like this:Imagine you are at home and you call your friend who is in Australia. You wear a haptic glove with the SSDs and your friend also wears a glove with integrated(集成的)3 D force sensors. If your friend picks up an object,it will physically press against your friend's fingers. And his/her glove with 3 D force sensors will measure these interactions. The force signals can be sent to your glove so your device will generate the same 3 D forces, making you experience the same sense of touch as your friend.
The haptic devices could be applied in various scenarios, allowing users to feel objects inside a virtual world or at a distance. This could be especially beneficial during such times like the COVID-19 pandemic when people rely on video calls to stay connected with loved ones.Or it could be used in medical practices.Doctors can feel a patient's organ tissues with surgical tools without touching them.

(1)What's the main purpose of the text?

A.To encourage the use of a new product.
B.To inform readers of a new invention.
    C.To compare different haptic devices.
D.To introduce the development of haptic technology.
(2)What can we learn about the SSD?

A.It mimics the sense of touch through a trackpad.
    B.It mainly uses vibration technology.
C.It takes the shape of a glove.
D.It makes virtual haptic communication possible.
(3)What does Paragraph 6 mainly talk about?

A.The advantages of the new haptic glove.
B.The applications of the new haptic technology.
C.An explanation of how the haptic device works.
D.A personal experience of using SSDs during a video call.
(4)How could the new haptic device benefit people?

A.It could replace video calls as a way to communicate.
B.it could be used for recreating organ tissues.
C.Doctors could perform surgeries at once.
D.Users could feel remote objects in a realistic way.

  • 5.Japan wastes a large amount of food every year.In the long-time search for a solution to the problem, the Japanese society has come up with some clever method.
       (1)
In 21013,a mobile app called TABETE was launched in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, aiming to use digital technology to save food that might go to waste. The app is now available in more than 500 stores and has more than 200,000 registered users.(2)
The app allows stores to post pictures and prices of foods that need to be saved, while consumers can search for nearby stores, place an online order, pay for them and then pick them up at an agreed time.
       (3)
It may be caused during production, processing.storage, transportation, selling and final consumption. While TABETE is targeting waste during selling, the nonprofit organization Mottainai Food Center is trying to reduce waste caused by shelf life issues.
Food purchased in Japanese stores is usually packaged in containers with "consumption period" or "savory(好吃的)period".(4)
And the "savory period" is the best time for fresh tastes. In short, food that passes the "savory period" may not taste as good, but is still safe to eat,a difference not known by many, leading to unnecessary waste.
       (5)
Then the center sells them at lower prices to aid welfare facilities, charities and poor people, reducing waste and helping those in need at the same time.

A.The problem of wasted food is very complex.
B.They urged local shops to become TABETE members.
C.People can download the app and log in for free to become a member.
D.The "consumption period" refers to the period during which food is safe to eat.
E.In recent years, smart phones have played a major role in cutting down wasted food.
F.The Japanese government has been urging the public to reduce wasted food for many years.
G.In light of this phenomenon,Mottainai Food Center collects these foods through purchase of donations.

  • 29.閱讀下面短文根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。
It took place in a teachers family. One day,Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother's favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day,she naturally noticed the cracks(裂紋)that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good.At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase.Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour's cat jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned.
However,in the face of her son's nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members,Ben's mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed,the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but,as he had already lied,he was determined to deny everything to the end,no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother's face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
