  • 2.In 2022,after five years of training and further five years on the wards,I resigned from my job as a junior doctor.Last year, the General Medical Council wrote to me to say they were taking my name off the medical register. It wasn't exactly a huge shock,as I hadn't practiced medicine for quite a while. But I found it a big deal on an emotional level to permanently close this chapter of my life.
When clearing out boxes of old paperwork,I noticed a training portfolio (檔案袋).All doctors are recommended to log their clinical experience in it.On looking through this portfolio for the first time in years,my reflective practice seemed to involve going up to my hospital on-call room and writing down anything remotely interesting that had happened that day.
Besides these,I was reminded of the long hours and the huge impact being a junior doctor had on my life.Reading back,it felt extreme and unreasonable in terms of what was expected of me,but at the time I'd just accepted it as part of the job.
Around the same time that I was reliving all this through my diaries, junior doctors in the here and now were coming under fire from politicians.I couldn't help but feel doctors were struggling to get their side of the story across and it struck me that the public weren't hearing the truth about what it actually means to be a doctor.Rather than shrugging my shoulders and ignoring the evidence,I decided I had to do something to redress the balance.
So here they are:the diaries I kept during my time in the hospital. What it's like working on the front line, the consequences in my personal life, and how,one terrible day,it all became too much for me. (Sorry for revealing what is in my book beforehand.)
Along the way,I'll help you out with the medical terms and provide a bit of context about what each job involved.Unlike being a junior doctor,I won't just drop you in the deep end and expect you to know exactly what you're doing.

(1)What does the writer think of his removal from the medical register?

A.It didn't affect him at all.
B.It weighed heavily on his mind.
C.It came as a shocking news for him.
D.It opened a new chapter of life for him.
(2)Which of the following can describe the writer's feeling as a junior doctor?

    A.Satisfied but tired.
    B.Ambitious but frustrated.
    C.Bored and stressed.
    D.Angry and uncomfortable.
(3)Which of the following best explains "redress the balance" underlined in Paragraph 5?

    A.Argue with politicians.
B.Tell the full story of doctors.
    C.Collect more solid evidence.
D.Win the support of the public.
(4)What does the writer intend to do by writing this article?

A.Reveal what it means to be a junior doctor.
B.Inform readers of some medical knowledge.
C.Give some background information on a book.
D.Encourage more people to practice medicine.

  • 3.The term"Metaverse"(元宇宙)is the latest buzzword(流行語)to capture the tech industry's imagination. It enjoys such popularity that Mark Zuckerberg,CEO of Facebook, has announced recently that he's changing his company's name to Meta Platforms Inc.jye.ai order to engage in the creative new trend.
This might be the biggest thing to happen to the metaverse since the science fiction writer Neal Stephenson invented the term for his 1992 novel Snow Crash. But Zuckerberg and his team are hardly the only tech giants with ideas on how the metaverse should take shape.
What is the metaverse?Zuckerberg has described it as a "virtual environment" you can go inside of rather than just looking at on a screen.Essentially,it's a world of interconnected virtual communities where people can meet, work and play,by using virtual reality glasses, smartphone or other devices. The metaverse also could be a game-changer for the work-from-home shift during the COVID-19.Instead of only seeing co-workers on a video call, employees could even join them in a virtual office.
However,Zuckerberg's support for the metaverse contradicts a central belief of its biggest enthusiasts. They regard the metaverse as online culture's liberation from tech platforms like Facebook that not only take control of people's accounts, photos and posts, but also trade off what they collected from that data. "We want to be able to move around the Internet with ease, but we also want to be able to move around the Internet in a way we're not tracked and monitored, " said Steve Jang, who focuses on crypto-currency(數(shù)字貨幣)technology.
When it comes to Facebook trying to lead the way into a virtual world, there is a growing concern among some people that it could require even more personal data and cause greater risks for information abuse when the company hasn't fixed those problems in its current platforms.

(1)Why is Zuckerberg changing the name of his company?

A.Because he likes to found the metaverse.
B.Because he intends to get involved in the metaverse.
C.Because he wants to draw public attention.
D.Because he plans to quit his present business.
(2)What can people do in the Metaverse?

A.Do everything in the real world.
B.Have meetings in the virtual office.
    C.Defeat the pandemic.
    D.See co-workers in person.
(3)What can be inferred about the central belief of Metaverse fans?

A.The metaverse should be tracked by tech platforms.
B.Tech platforms should possess and trade users' data.
    C.Crypto-currency technology should be monitored.
D.Users should have control over their own data.
(4)What is some people's attitude towards Facebook's attempt to guide the metaverse?

    A.Optimistic.
    B.Neutral.
    C.Worried.
    D.Pessimistic.

  • 4.A colleague recently sent me an article,Cutting back on waste is possible--if you can afford it,to read.It argued that reducing waste-food-related,in particular- is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone working low-wage jobs with little extra time. The conclusion?Zero waste is something only suitable for people who can afford, not for those who are struggling to get by.
However,I take issue with the idea that zero waste must be all or nothing.I think this is an unfortunate mentality that prevents valuable progress toward reducing one's food- related waste.
When we get too hung up on the idea of so-called zero waste and of being like the zero waste superstar Bea Johnson who can fit years of trash in a single jar,we start missing the broader point. The goal, after all,is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable(可持續(xù)的) for us,with our own unique resources and living situations.
I live in a small rural town with no fancy zero- waste stores. My husband and I both work full-time.I am uninterested in spending my free time doing DIY projects and driving from store to store in search of perfect packaging.Instead,I just do the best I can.
When I first read about Bea Johnson's multi-stop grocery shopping routine,I tried to copy it.That lasted a few weeks before 1 gave up.Unlike her,I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores are closer together than in rural Ontario.Instead,I've resigned myself to the supermarket being the main supply of food and trying to work with it.
Now,when I enter the supermarket on a once weekly basis,I view all packaging through a critical eye.I make constant comparisons between how one brand packages its food to another. That is the main factor in deciding what to buy, though I also consider the unit price, the origin and the ingredients.

(1)What is the idea of the article recommended by the author s colleague?

A.Most people can afford zero waste.
    B.Food-related waste is unavoidable.
C.Cutting down on waste costs much.
D.The poor care little about food waste.
(2)How does the author understand the concept of zero waste?

A.It is related to recycling our resources.
B.It prevents people from reducing waste.
C.It means fitting your trash in a single jar.
    D.It encourages reasonable green practices.
(3)Why did the author fail to follow Bea Johnson?

A.Her living situations differed from hers.
B.She hardly knew about food packaging.
    C.She didn't receive her husband's support.
D.Her love for shopping was deeply rooted.
(4)What's the best title of the text?

A.Live in a Small Town for a Zero waste Life
B.Forget Zero Waste and Be Better Shoppers
C.Take Advantage of Local Zero-waste Shops
D.Stop Wasting and Build a Greener Society

第二節(jié)(共1小題;每小題2. 5分,滿分12. 5分)

  • 5.Agriculture has come a long way from its ancient beginnings.Long ago, farmers would work hard on their individual plots of land, using simple tools or even their bare hands. They tended to their crops for many hours each day so that the crops grew well.(1)
For example,a single storm could destroy a whole year's work, while a summer of good weather could ensure a good harvest.
Modern science and technology have helped to greatly reduce the back-breaking labour involved in farming, along with the reliance on luck and guesswork(2)

Probably one of the most beneficial innovations is drip irrigation, which has made it possible to develop big, green farms in the middle of the desert.Simcha Blass,an Israeli scientist, discovered this new way of irrigation in the 1930s.Through this discovery, farmers can now produce crops on dry land without needing much water. (3)
The limited and focused use of just the right amount of water also denies moisture (水分) to weeds, keeping them from harming the crops.
       (4)
However, what if an area has plenty of water, but little usable soil?As it turns out,it is possible to grow plants without using soil at all. With hydroponics(水培),plant roots are supported by rocks or a fiber mat.Nutrient-rich water is then provided so that the plants can grow.Recent research has centered on vertical hydroponics farming. With a vertical farm, the crops are planted in containers that are piled into plant skyscrapers.(5)

With such technological advances, the image of a farmer pushing a plough will eventually become a thing of the past.

A.Luck played a great part in farming.
B.Some areas would be too dry to grow crops.
C.Drip irrigation deals with a lack of water in an area.
D.There have been experiments to make drip irrigation a reality.
E.This irrigation method uses far less water than other methods.
F.Furthermore, nearly all hydroponic farms partially or fully automated.
G.Farmers have benefited greatly from innovations in crop production.
