  • 1.On Saturday 24 August,1918,it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes.People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too!People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish - sand eels- lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea,which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland?
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout.Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful;anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances - sometimes over 150 kilometers. It's very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009,dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012,fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017,fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you.It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change, global wanning and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?

  • 2.The red siskin holds a special place in Venezuela.Pictures of the bird appear on the country's money,on products and in school textbooks. The "Little Cardinal",as the bird is affectionately called,is loved by Venezuela.
However, this brilliantly colored songbird is now in danger. It has been vanishing at an alarming rate from the wild because of shrinking habitat and poachers cashing in on its red feathers prized around the world by breeders of exotic birds.Once flourishing in the millions,as few as about 300 remain in the wild in Venezuela.
That threat has brought together an international team that includes scientists from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.,and poor coffee farmers in Venezuela. They are all set on rescuing the red siskin from extinction. "They don't have many years left, unless we do something right now," said Miguel Arvelo,a vet for the non-profit organization Provita.
The Red Siskin Initiative began about three years ago.The plan is to persuade farmers to plant organic coffee plants with layers of thick branches that are inviting to the endangered bird.In the meantime,a red siskin breeding center is being built at a private zoo in Venezuela. The zoo expects to hatch 200 of the birds next year, which will be introduced into the coffee plant habitats.
The coffee initiative has been showing positive results. Some 40 farmers in the coastal mountains of Carayaca have stopped cutting down trees- an important first step.
Protecting the red siskin from poachers has been challenging due to Venezuela's economic crisis.Poor Venezuelan families often capture and sell the threatened bird to illegal traffickers.Researchers and scientists have been robbed or shot by Venezuela's growing poor population.
Scientists keep the places where the birds are known to live a secret to protect them from poachers.Catching sight of them required arriving before dawn and hiding in tall grass under pouring rain. Then, the sun broke through and they swooped in,landing one by one on tree branches overhead, singing loudly.
"It's the first time I've seen so many together," said biologist Jhonathan Miranda,a Provita researcher. "It gives us hope.

(1)Why is "pictures of the bird" mentioned in Paragraph 1?

D.The bird likes to stay with poor coffee farmers in Venezuela.
(3)What has caused the decreasing number of the red siskins?Because
    .
①Venezuelan families has captured and sold the birds to the illegal buyers.
②The poachers have been capturing them for their feather to make profits.
③Farmers in Venezuela keep them for food in their daily life.
④Their living habitat has been disappearing day by day.
    A.①②
    B.①③
    C.②④
    D.③④

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)3.Six months ago,19-year-old Xie Lei said goodbye to her family and friends and boarded a plane for London. It was the first time that she had left China.
Xie Lei is studying for a business qualification at a university in China and has come to our university on a year-long exchange programme. "I chose the exchange programme because I wanted to learn about global business and improve my English. My ambition is to set up a business in China after graduation, " she explained.
At first,Xie Lei had to adapt to life in a different country. "You have to get used to a whole new life," she said. "I had to learn how to use public transport and how to ask for things I didn't know the English names for. When I got lost,I had to ask passers-by for help, but people here speak fast and use words I'm not familiar with.I ask them to repeat themselves a lot !"
Although some foreign students live in campus accommodation,Xie Lei chose to live with a host family who can help with her adaptation to the new culture. "When I miss home,I feel comforted to have a second family, " Xie Lei said. "When there's something I don't know or understand,I ask them. They are also keen to learn about China.Laura, the daughter of my host family, wants to study in China in the future. We take turns to cook each evening. They really love my stir-fried tomatoes and eggs!Laura says she always feels hungry when she smells it,so I taught her how to cook it,too !"
Another challenge for Xie Lie is the academic requirements. The first time that she had to write an essay, her tutor explained that she must acknowledge what other people had said if she cited their ideas, but that he mainly wanted to know what she thought!Xie Lei was confused because she thought she knew less than other people. Her tutor advised her to read a lot of information in order to form a wise opinion of her own.
Xie Lei also found many courses included students' participation in class as part of the final result.Students need to generate ideas, offer examples, apply concepts, and raise questions,as well as give presentjye.aiions.At first,Xie Lei had no idea what she should say but what surprised her was that she found herself speaking up in class after just a few weeks. "My presentation on traditional Chinese art was a great success, which boosted my confidence," she said, "I'll use these skills back home for presentation. They'll help me build a strong business in the future".
Now halfway through her exchange year,Xie Lei feels much more at home in the UK.What seemed strange before now appears quite normal to her." Engaging in British culture has helped," she said. "As well as studying hard,I've been involved in social activities.British people are fascinated by our culture and eager to learn more about it,so I'm keen to share my culture with them. While I'm learning about business,I'm also acting as a cultural messenger building a bridge between us."
We will follow Xie Lei's progress in later editions, but for now,we wish her all the best.

Can a small group of drones(無(wú)人機(jī))guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and,at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of applying today's"eyes in the sky"technology to making sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved.Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient(高效)across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night,to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews' efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don't need to be flying overhead.Engineers are now working on a new concept:the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously.Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot.With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem,so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.

(1)What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible?

A.The use of drones in checking on power lines.
B.Drones' ability to work at high altitudes.
C.The reduction of cost in designing drones.
D.Drones' reliable performance in remote areas.
    (2)What does"maintenance"underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Personnel safety.
    B.Assistance from drones.
    C.Inspection and repair.
    D.Construction of infrastructure.
(3)What function is expected of the rail drones?

    A.To provide early warning.
    B.To make trains run automatically.
C.To earn profits for the crews.
    D.To accelerate transportation.
(4)Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B.How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C.What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D.How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways

  • 5.If you live in a place where most people speak the language you are learning, you may use the language for several hours each day.But you may not have these chances to practice English. You may even be self-taught.(1)
It is not very difficult, but it does take effort and practice.
       Think in single words.
    (2)
In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings. As you continue with this,it becomes more of a habit,so things are going to pop up into your head - computer, telephone, chair, and desk.Whatever it is,wherever you are.You can also do this at home when you wake up and before you go to sleep.
    (3)

Another exercise is describing in your mind objects you don't know the words for.An example would be if you couldn't think of the word "garage," Hinshaw says."If you're looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can't think of the name in English. You can say, 'The place inside where I put my car.'"
       Think in sentences.
The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences. For example,if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, "It's such a beautiful day" and "People are playing sports with their friends."(4)

       Describe your day.
Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily activities. You can mentally make plans in the morning when you wake up.(5)
So the skill level is a little higher.

    A.Describe unknown words.
B.Guess the meaning of a new word.
C.This would require future verb tenses.
D.A good first step is to think in individual words.
E.Hinshaw says doing this can help learners of any language.
F.Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.
G.The good news is that thinking in English can bring you a huge step closer to fluency!
