  • 2.Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids.According to a new survey by the National Sleep Foundation,51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early.Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7-to-12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day,and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age.Babies need a lot of rest:most of them sleep about 18 hours a day!Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的).But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10-to-12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime?Watch TV.
"More children are going to bed with TVs on,and there are more opportunities to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone," says Dr.Mary Carskadon,a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep.Other experts say part of the problem is chemical.Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers' bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to.Three years ago, schools in Edina,Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am.Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.

    A.7 hours.
    B.8 hours.
    C.10 hours.
    D.18 hours.
(3)Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon ?

A.They are affected by certain body chemicals.
B.They tend to do things that excite them.
    C.They follow their parents' examples.

  • 4."Drink your milk. It?s good for you! " You?ve probably heard that many times, and,it?s true.Milk contains calcium (鈣) ,which is a necessary nutrient or keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong. The U.S.government even requires milk as part of the National School Lunch Program, saying that students should drink one cup of fat-free or low-fat milk at each meal.
Last Thursday, however,a group of doctors asked the government to remove milk from the lunch program. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) says, "Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein, all of which have negative effects on health." "One of the only reasons, people talk about milk,or praise it,is that it is going to help build strong bones, " says Dr.Neal Barnard, president of the PCRM.There are better and healthier ways to get calcium such as eating beans, broccoli, cereals and tofu.Orange juice and soymilk that have calcium added to them also supply the nutrient.
Of course, calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth, but your genes, how much vitamin D you take in and getting an hour?s worth of exercise every day all play a part.
Some nutritionists (營養(yǎng)學(xué)家) disagree with the idea that milk isn't important.Keri Gans,a dietitian, says, " I think it?s irresponsible to take away milk that children enjoy, especially among those who are unable to meet their nutrient needs for the day,and remove it from the lunch. "
The U.S.government is studying the request of the PCRM,but a decision may be a long way off.Meanwhile,Marion Nestle,a professor at New York University, puts it best, "Milk has nutrients.Other foods have the same nutrients. It?s just a food.Like other foods, too much might be a problem."

(1)Why does the U.S.government ask students to drink one cup of milk at lunch time?

A.The government has the right to do so.
B.It has taken the PCRM's advice.
C.Fat-free or low-fat milk is less expensive.
D.Milk helps build students? strong bones.
(2)Which of the following opinions does the PCRM support?

A.Milk is harmful to students' health.
B.Students should drink more milk each day.
C.Orange juice is higher in calcium than milk.
D.Milk is high in healthy protein.
(3)What can we learn from Marion Nestle?s words?

A.Milk has more nutrients than other food.
B.Milk is just a kind of common food.
C.Other foods also contain much sugar.
    D.Too much milk doesn't make a difference.
(4)What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The best way to get the most calcium.
B.The connection between milk and health.
C.Different opinions about the importance of milk.
D.Whether to take milk off the school-lunch menu.

  • 5.With the Christmas Day,the New Year,as well as the Spring Festival plus the Valentine's Day past the way or on the way,the gift-giving season has been in full swing. When receiving a gift contrary to your expectation, some will feel annoyed and it may lead to quarrelling. (1)

       Don't expect a specific gift.
First of all, before you've even opened the present, you need to get yourself in the right mind tendency. If you've got a specific gift in mind (say,a new pair of running shoes—please Santa!),you're only setting yourself up for disappointment. (2)

Have an open mind about it.
Once you've opened the present and seen whatever it may be,give yourself a moment.Don't react until you've had a proper look at the thing.(3)
Instead you should take it seriously and consider why it is.With that in mind, try to figure out whether you could,in fact, learn to love it.
       (4)

Right after you say "thank you!" and before you say anything else, you need to find something positive to comment about the gift.It could be something as small as the fact that you like the color of jye.ai.It could be that you think it's practical. If you begin with the word of praise, the whole thing will be much easier.
Skillfully ask about the gift receipt (收據(jù)).
If you've decided that you're likely not going to use the thing at all,ask about the gift receipt skillfully. Now you should give a seemingly convincing reason for wanting it.For example,if it's a clothing item, you could say that it's in case it doesn't quite fit. (5)
Let the gift-giver feel at ease.
No matter what you receive, always remember to see things in others' shoes.

    A.Don't be casual about it.
B.Find something to speak highly of.
C.Your friendship may come to an end.
D.Get your gift ready before leaving home.

F.If it's a glass items, say you just want to have it in case it breaks.
