  • 2922.WOMEN all over the world are upset-Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch,38,has announced that he is engaged(訂婚的).
Despite feeling heartbroken, however, the actor's fans were still pleased by the traditional British way that he announced his engagement to the 36-year-old theater director and actress Sophie Hunter.Instead of posting a silly photo on social media, the actor instead chose to place a message in Britain's The Times newspaper.
Cumberbatch was following traditional British etiquette(禮儀),which says that a newly- engaged couple should tell their parents and friends first. The engagement can then be announced in a local or national newspaper, according to the Debrett's British etiquette website.
So what happens next?Well,if tradition is to be followed, then the proud Mrs Cumberbatch may have some writing to do.The Debrett's website explains: "Traditionally, the mother of the groom-to-be(準(zhǔn)新郎)should write to the bride-to-be's parents, showing her happiness at the engagement."
And Cumberbatch's friends also have rules to follow if they are to celebrate properly. The website further explains: "Once the engagement is made public, friends should send a letter or card of congratulations. The letter should be either to the bride-to-be or her fiance(未婚夫) but never both.Well-wishers should write to the person they were friends with first or are related to."
So if you're still a fan of Cumberbatch despite him breaking your heart, perhaps you should dry your tears and send him a letter of congratulations. It would probably make a man of such British traditions happy.

(1)According to the British etiquette, which of the following is a traditional thing to do?

A.Friends write to the newly-engaged couple to express congratulations.
B.A couple announces their engagement by posting a photo on social media.
C.A couple informs their parents and friends of their engagement before making it public.
D.The mother of the bride-to-be writes to the groom-to-be's parents to show her happiness.
(2)What can we learn from the passage?

A.Cumberbatch is popular in the UK for the role of Sherlock.
B.In Britain, friends can celebrate a couple's engagement the way they like.
C.Fans thought highly of Cumberbatch's engagement with Sophie Hunter.
D.Great respect for parents and friends is shown in the traditional British engagement.
(3)What's the writer's tone in the last paragraph?
